The Art of War for Today

Getting a decent haircut can make you or break for extended periods of time. Now while the girls will probably understand this statement more so than the guys, it seems that the gap is closing rapidly. The next line really sums it up in regards to getting the hairstyle you want. Girls know what they want however getting it is not so simple.

4.4. Hence the saying: One may KNOW how to conquer without being able to DO it.

You get a proper haircut or style from a stylist or barber who know what they are doing. The problem remains is how do you find a such a professional? If you can't find one then how do you get a decent haircut, you don't, you suffer until you do. That's the fact.

7.12. We cannot enter into alliances until we are acquainted with the designs of our neighbours.

When you let someone who claims to be a hairdresser is making a alliance of some significant importance. It will affect your self esteem, your confidence so it is not something to not take seriously. So you need to do some homework and probably a lot of shopping around.

2. 2. When you engage in actual fighting, if victory is long in coming, then men's weapons will grow dull and their ardour will be damped. If you lay siege to a town, you will exhaust your strength.

If your hairdresser disappears, it can be like having a death in family. Truly! A few horrors, you can dread trying out a new hairdresser or you find yourself expecting the worse and so not communicating properly with the unknown person about to make your day or toss it into the pits of hell. There will be times when you fight back the tears and rage and try to leave as quickly and inconspicuously as possible. Then you will try to avoid anyone of significance until your hair grows out to a length that will hide some of the horror. Then in six to twelve you either have to convince yourself you like the new length of your hair or suck the courage to go again and try you luck.

4.13. He wins his battles by making no mistakes. Making no mistakes is what establishes the certainty of victory, for it means conquering an enemy that is already defeated.

This is how you get the perfect hair style. You make no mistakes about who you trust you locks to, the time and the time of the day you choose to get it done. Monday morning is dangerous depending how good the stylists weekend went. Friday afternoons are similarly dangerous as you don't want them to be concentrating more on the upcoming weekend than you hair. You want someone who is properly trained, has a professional attitude and demeanour, who loves what they do, loves meeting customers and of course, does not make mistakes. Not so tough really when you think about it. You do not want to make a mistake, just like the person with the scissors.

So here are some considerations:

1.12. Therefore, in your deliberations, when seeking to determine the military conditions, let them be made the basis of a comparison, in this wise: --
1.13. (1) Which of the two sovereigns is imbued with the Moral law?

So which of the candidates, if any has come recommended. Sadly, some recommendations have impacted on friendships and not for the better. A good sign is how busy they are, if you have to book a week in advance is usually a good sign but is not fool proof.

(2) Which of the two generals has most ability?

Normally if a stylist is accomplished, word of mouth will spread quickly. One should not be too reticent to stop a stranger in the street who has a style you like and ask them who cut their hair.

(3) With whom lie the advantages derived from Heaven and Earth?

Before allowing someone access to your crowning glory, interview them. It is your hair, in effect cutting your hair is a job. Granted it is only for a short period of time every month or two, however it is still a job and you should interview them. Not just their professional qualifications but a little about them. Does it not drive you crazy to find one who is great, only to have them move on before you have a chance for a second cut to prove they are good and you need to follow them?

(4) On which side is discipline most rigorously enforced?

Size up the whole business. What do you or your friends know about the shop and the people in it? Has it just opened or undergone a change in management? Have you heard of a client not happy with a style or haircut receiving a complimentary cut and an apology? Pass by a few times and see if the staff are behaving in a professional manner or behaving in manner to make you question what you see?

(5) Which army is stronger?

Again, the busier the salon the better the indications that you may have found somewhere good. However in every basket their could be a bad apple. So watch how people leave the salon. Take notice of who is attending to which client to see if they are getting a style you want and how happy they are as they leave the saloon. While all this takes time, doing your homework if you are choosing between two or more saloons can really help you make the right choice.

(6) On which side are officers and men more highly trained?
(7) In which army is there the greater constancy both in reward and punishment?

This information can be collected easily by asking. You can gather even more information in how willingly they gave you this information and how they treated you as a person while doing so.

14. By means of these seven considerations I can forecast victory or defeat.

Doing your home work can pay big dividends, it can guarantee a perfect cut every time however it should help reduce the horror experiences.

15. The general that hearkens to my counsel and acts upon it, will conquer: --let such a one be retained in command! The general that hearkens not to my counsel nor acts upon it, will suffer defeat: --let such a one be dismissed!

If you won't do it for yourself then no one can do it for you.

16. While heading the profit of my counsel, avail yourself also of any helpful circumstances over and beyond the ordinary rules.

Listen to your friends, acquaintances, commercials and any other source of information that can consider and add it to the equation depending on how much you trust the source of the information.

5. 21. The clever combatant looks to the effect of combined energy, and does not require too much from individuals. Hence his ability to pick out the right men and utilise combined energy.

By including friends and family in the hunt for a good stylist helps you cover more ground and options then you could by yourself. Nowadays you can throw it out there on FaceBook or twitter. Although I am not so sure many would, however it is still an option worth considering.

6.19. Knowing the place and the time of the coming battle, we may concentrate from the greatest distances in order to fight.

We all know that we have to get haircuts, yet do we really prepare for them? Do we look around at what is out there or study the magazines they have in their shops? You don't have to get a haircut everytime you enter. You can talk to the staff or get them to advise you while you peruse their magazines on styles. If you feel comfortable then you can consider letting them touch your hair. Let them vie for your patronage and trust.

6.2. Therefore the clever combatant imposes his will on the enemy, but does not allow the enemy's will to be imposed on him.

When you are ready to jump in and get it done, make sure they do what you want and not let them talk you into something you are not sure or comfortable with. It your head, your emotional risk, so make sure you get the message clear on what you want. While it seems to recommending you go in and boss everyone around, this is not what is being suggested. Be firm, it is up to them to understand what looks good on you and want you want. It is always your prerogative to walk out and go elsewhere before they start cutting. So before they start snipping make sure you are one hundred percent comfortable, if aren't then withdraw and do some more searching.

A word of warning to the men out there, if you think this is a fluff piece of no great import, then you had better like being thrown into the dog house and left there on a regular basis. Getting a haircut for us is not a big deal for most of us, however misunderstand the importance of this part of the feminine psyche at your own peril.
